4 Reasons You Should Unplug On Your Next Vacation

In The Happiness Advantage, research has shown that when the brain can think positively, productivity improves by 31%. Everyone requires periodic breaks to gain a better perspective and regain energy, allowing their brains to recharge. Going on vacations is the best way to relax, but the effects are even better when you disconnect. Here are four reasons why you should unplug on your next holiday:

1.    Boost your health
In today’s digital world, everyone seems to be constantly glued to their phones. However, research has shown that the prolonged usage of phones can negatively affect emotions, increase stress levels, and cause chronic pain and eye problems. It can also impair memory when you become too distracted to be aware of your surroundings. A vacation should always be relaxing and stress-free, and unplugging will significantly improve your health.

2.    Uncover hidden gems
Go ahead, be bold and explore a foreign country without a location device! With a humble, old-school paper map, you might just find yourself wandering off the beaten path and locating hidden gems. Opting for a nature walk could also refresh your senses as you take long strolls in a serene environment, thereby rebooting your brain and improving your mood.

3.    Forge genuine connections
Without technology in the way, you will also get to make more intimate connections through meaningful conversations with your travel buddies and the locals you meet. Having to ask for directions creates rich opportunities to interact with the locals on a deeper level and at the same time, rebuild your social skills by enhancing your ability to maintain eye contact with others and interpret nonverbal cues. It might sound like basic skills to hone, but you’ll be surprised at how many of us behave inadequately in social settings these days!

4.    Recharge with positivity
While weekends are often the easiest way to disconnect from the stresses of work, occasional holidays are even better as it is a prolonged period of time that removes you from all activities and environments that could actually be a source of stress. However we are probably still guilty of taking fake-cations, so why not try a digital detox on your next vacation? It will provide you with enough time to recharge yourself with positive emotions before heading back to work.

Remember, it is important to plan ahead to further reduce travel stress. Make sure you set a realistic schedule to finish your pending tasks, delegate your work to others before leaving, and reschedule activities that are not of immediate priority. Once you are done, you are all set and ready to enjoy your unplugged vacation!
