Everyday Tips to Avoid Burnout at Work
Back to:
Oct 15, 2015 |

A 2013 JobStreet.com survey showed that 60% of Singaporean employees feel mentally exhausted due to stress and depression. These may be signs of a burnout. As working professionals, it’s very important for us to identify and address the reason for stress at work so that we can enjoy a successful and healthy career.

The Association of Psychological Science classifies burnout into three types:

  • Overload – exhaustion from a frenetic pace at work
  • Boredom – cynicism from work that isn’t challenging
  • Worn-out – demotivation from perceived barriers

Barriers at the workplace and a heavy workload are factors that may not change right away. However, these everyday tips will help ease our stress at the workplace:

Learn to prioritise
The best way to manage a long task-list is to prioritise. List the day's work according to level of importance and manage them one at a time.

Break down the project into more manageable sizes
Breaking it down into smaller tasks is an effective way of handling stress. Taking a short break after the completion of each task, can help.

Delegate work
Our work efficiency is not measured according to how much we can do on our own, but according to how much we can effectively finish on time. Delegating specific tasks helps ease the pressure.

Set realistic deadlines
Tension begins the moment we realize that a deadline is too short. Where possible, set realistic deadlines for work.

Share a joke
Laughter is the best medicine. It’s the easiest way to de-stress at work and make friends. Laughing together makes the work environment stress free for everyone.

Take some 'me time'
Brisk walking, reading a book, perusing a hobby, meditation... it could be anything. 30 minutes of ‘me time’ every day is key to alleviating stress.

Enjoy our vacation
According to a survey by workplace provider Regus, 45% of working professionals in Singapore reported that they would work at least 3 hours a day while on holiday. Vacations are a time to take a break from work and refresh our mind and body. It's time we enjoyed them to the fullest so that we can get back to work feeling fresh and rejuvenated.
