AXA Art Newsletter Passionate About Art

Dear Friends
Some of you may have heard of the recent news about the theft of a Vincent Van Gogh's masterpiece in Cairo museum. Many people are surprised that it is possible to steal the painting even with security measures in place. The fact is that the museum's security system has been out of order since December 2006. Click HERE for the article.
Is this an isolated case and only the museum is in danger? I doubt so. While many art organizations have security alarm systems and CCTV surveillance installed, some of these organizations do not maintain the systems and have left the risks at large. Further, some art organizations may not see the importance of having their premises secured and allegedly claim that their sites are safe with no known loss history. It seems that they are waiting for the first mishap to occur before taking any preventive measures.
Instead of leaving it to chance, we want to encourage these art owners to have their premises surveyed for security risks, for the sake of their art collections. Valuable art collections are vulnerable to possible perils such as fire and smoke, water, theft and accidental damage. Any sensible precautions can often prevent or minimize damage.
In this edition, I hope that the information will help create awareness, avoid, or at least lessen, the extent of any potential loss. AXA Art, a specialist insurer of Fine Art & Antiques, provides you with advice relating to the risk management and security. For further enquiries, please contact charles.liu@axa.com.sg.

Fine Art Salvage Guidelines
-
Intruder alarms should, ideally, always be set (even during the day time) whenever you leave home, even for the shortest periods.
-
Make sure that doors and windows are locked when you leave home. Remember to also secure any 'accessible' windows on the upper floors.
-
Many thefts are 'opportunist' - always check who you open your door to and ask for identification. Never leave strangers unattended.
-
Simple time switches, which can regularly turn on lights or play music, will make it harder for burglars to determine whether you are home or not.
-
Occupancy is often the best form of security. A regular inspection, at least twice a week, by family, staff or key holders gives the impression of occupancy. This can be simply achieved by regularly emptying your mailbox, adjusting curtains, blinds or shutters, and dropping rubbish into the dustbin in order to create the impression that someone is at home.
-
You should always make sure that you can be reached whenever you are away from home for an extended period. You can do this by giving a neighbour or your security company, a telephone number on which you can be reached. If you have a mobile phone, do not forget to take along a charged device.
-
Never try to confront a burglar. If possible, use the silent alarm button in your intruder alarm system to summon assistance, or telephone the police.
Disasters can strike any organization, large or small, be it a storm, fire, flood or even a terrorist outrage. To overcome a disaster, an action plan is required in advance. Indeed any organization that undertakes a logical, structured view of the threats facing it and then works out how to respond to them, has already reduced the impact if disaster strikes.
This set of guidelines aims to prompt owners of art properties, into considering the many aspects of risk management and prevention, as well as advice on points to consider when formulating a Fine Art Salvage Plan.
