Don't Drink & Drive

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

"I had a drink much earlier, So I am ok now." or "I'm only going down the road."'

Many of us already know that drink driving is dangerous. However, we are often able to find excuses like the above. Don’t take chances. Alcohol impairs your driving skills in many ways. Your vision will be affected, you react slower and you lose your sense of good judgment. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. There is no fool-proof way of knowing how much an individual person can drink and still drive safely.

 

Facts

  • The legal limit of alcohol is 35 microgrammes per 100 millitres of breath* or not more than 2 cans of beer of 220ml or equivalent.
  • Even when the alcohol level is under the legal limit, the driver can still be convicted if it is shown that he/she did not have proper control of the vehicle as a result of alcoholic intoxication*. For example, a driver who causes an accident by ramming into a stationary vehicle can be liable for a drink-driving conviction, even though his breath-alcohol level falls within the legal limit.
  • If you drive at twice the legal alcohol limit you are at least 30 times more likely to cause a road crash, than a driver who hasn't been drinking.

Been drinking? Take a different way home.

If you've been drinking, it's better not to drive. There are plenty of alternative options to get home - you could:

  • book a taxi
  • use public transport
  • arrange a lift with someone who isn't drinking

Time does the trick

Coffee and cold showers don't help you sober up. Time is the only way to get alcohol out of your system.

 

Survey Bites

Findings from the 2011 AXA Road Safety Survey:

  • Respondents rank drink driving as the most dangerous driving habit.
  • In terms of knowing the alcohol limit, less than 10% of Singapore drivers know the correct alcohol limit (>35 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath) while 48% stated a limit that is lower than that.
