Use Your Seatbelt

There are many safety tips for driving and it is difficult to remember all. A simple and effective start is to always wear a seat belt. A simple seatbelt can save lives in so many ways. In case of an impact, it spreads the force over a greater area of your body and minimizes your contact with the interior of the vehicle. It also prevents you from being thrown off your vehicle! So your route to road safety starts here.

Facts

  • Seat belts can reduce the risk of death or injury due to a vehicle collision by almost half.

Safety Tips

Seatbelt Maintenance:

Car owners should check the condition of seatbelts in their vehicle as a standard part of vehicle maintenance routine. The following things should be checked:

  • The seat belts are not twisted, cut or frayed.
  • The buckles are in good working order, engaging and releasing properly.
  • The retractors work properly. The seat belt should pull out smoothly and be fully retracted when not in use.

Seatbelt Usage:

  • Heavy clothing may push the seat belt up over the stomach.
  • The belt must not go under the arm because that could result in serious injury in a crash.

Survey Bites

Findings from the 2011 AXA Road Safety Survey:

  • There has been a drop in drivers perceiving driving without a seatbelt as a dangerous behaviour from 82% in 2010 to 74% in 2011.
  • 27% of Singapore drivers admit to having driven without a seatbelt.
